KARAKI MODERNO

modern joinery technique using Karaki

Ebony, Sandal wood, Chinese quince and Tagayasan are generally called Karaki. Although this term means precious materials from old China, these timbers are in fact grown in tropical areas such as Taiwan and Thailand.
The solid textures and noble, rich colours of these timbers are distinctive, and render them particularly attractive as furniture wood.

The city of Osaka, the main commercial city of western Japan, has 300years a canter(English, or center, American) for the manufacture and distribution of Karaki joinery. During this time, a tradition of fine furniture has developed. all the items (tables, shelves etc) are constructed entirely from wooden components, and no metal nails are used in the joinery.

To this long and excellent hand craft tradition, I wish to bring a new and fresh touch adding to the distinctive charm of the old masters'(genetive plural) techniques in the manufacturing of Karaki joinery.
